In my last post, I eluded to a message that Spirit B gave me in the middle of the Patagonian Race while looking out at the biggest, brightest and longest lasting rainbow I had ever witnessed. As we weaved up and down little valleys and across turbal, he was following us and saying:
“Mama, this is your rainbow baby. It’s here, inside you, with you”
WHAT!? Really!? I said (inside my head)
“Yes, Mama, really.”
And that is when it hit. Hours later, when we were in the middle of a huge bike leg I looked over at Jason: “I’m pregnant.” “What!?” “How do you know!?”
“Spirit B said so”
This was day 3 into what would be a 6 day race for us. While I was still extremely focused on the race and keeping our lead, another part of me was filled with both excitement and wonder.
I decided that I would let myself believe it, because it was a fun story to dream about and honestly for years Jason and I had always joked about conceiving during this race. “The only thing we haven’t done in this race yet is make a baby” We would say.
I didn’t think it would actually happen though. On the night before the race, I couldn’t sleep and rolled over to Jason. “This is our chance babe”
and that was that.
When I crossed the finish line, I was so happy that I honestly completely forgot about the notion of being pregnant. But then, as the days wore on, I could feel there was a little something different with me.
Two weeks later, on the eve before we were about to take off for a teaching weekend in Florida I took a test to see if I would in fact be getting my period that weekend. One dark line came up and then one faint line came up.
When I came out of the bathroom, Max and Jason were wrestling on the floor. I got down on the floor with them and asked “Max, does Mama have a baby in her belly?”
“Yeah!” he screeched as he lifted up my shirt and kissed my belly.
Jason and I looked at each other and smiled.
Spirit was right. The next morning on the plane, I looked out and saw a faint rainbow in the morning sunrise.
“I told you Mama” Spirit said.
” I know baby”
“I love you, I love you, I love you”
