The Couch That Turned Me Into a Couch Person

I’ve never really been a “couch person.”

I’m far more likely to end up sitting on the kitchen counter, outside on the deck, sprawled in the grass after a run, or somehow halfway into another project before I ever intentionally sit down and relax. Rest has never been my strongest skill as movement usually wins.

So when we brought the Soma Chic House modular couch into our home, I assumed everyone else would love it more than I would.

And for the first week and a half, that was true.

The boys claimed recliner spots immediately. My husband disappeared into it after long days. Blankets started collecting there within hours. Someone was always building a fort, reading books, taking a nap or piling together after dinner.

Meanwhile, I mostly orbited around it.

But slowly, somewhere between post-adventure exhaustion and quiet evenings reading to the boys under blankets, something shifted.

I started sitting down and taking more breaks through out the day.

And now? I kind of get it.

A Couch for Real Life

One thing I appreciated immediately was how approachable the entire setup process felt.

If you’ve ever ordered large furniture before, you know the feeling: giant intimidating boxes, confusing instructions, and the assumption that you’ll need another adult, an entire afternoon, and probably an argument to get it assembled.

But this one was surprisingly manageable.

It came in many big boxes on a day Jason was out of town. The boys were so excited about it and could not wait for him to get home. So, the boys and I put the Soma Chic House couch together on our own (but really, they helped out more by taking the boxes outside to play in them). I weaved the set up between normal family chaos, snack requests, and kids climbing on half-built cushions as I went. The modular design made it easy to move pieces around and figure out what worked best in our space without committing to one fixed layout forever.

That flexibility matters more than I realized, because family spaces are rarely static.

Some nights our living room is a movie theater. Other nights it’s a recovery lounge after long runs, bike rides, or race weekends. Sometimes it’s a wrestling arena. Sometimes it’s a reading nook and most often, it’s the place everyone collapses after a full day outside. This couch adapts to all of it.

The individual pieces are easy to move around and fit together in a slick way.

The Unexpected Comfort Factor

I expected the couch to look good, I expected the boys to love it and I expected it to be practical. But what I didn’t expect was how comfortable it actually is.

And not just in the “nice for a showroom” kind of way. In the real-life way. The way where you sit down for a minute and suddenly an hour disappears because everyone ended up piled together reading a book or playing a game.

At first, I wasn’t fully sold. I think part of that is simply because slowing down doesn’t come naturally to me. I’m usually thinking about the next training session, the next adventure, or the next thing that needs to get done.

But over time, the couch became part of our family rhythm.

After dinner, we naturally migrate there. The boys grab books and blankets and we read together. Sometimes we watch a movies after long days outside. Sometimes we just crash there for a few quiet minutes before bed.

And I realized something : Comfort doesn’t always have to mean stopping. Sometimes it just means creating space to land together for a little while.

Modular Matters More with Kids

If you have kids, you already know furniture lives a hard life.

It gets climbed on, jumped on, rearranged, snack-covered, spilled on, fortified, and generally treated as part playground, part recovery station and part family command center. The modular setup honestly works really well for this season of life.

We can shift pieces around depending on what we’re doing, and the couch somehow manages to feel both cozy and functional at the same time. It’s big enough for everyone without dominating the room, and flexible enough that it feels usable instead of precious. Which, for our family, is important.

Also, just the other day, our son spilled some of his drink on one of the cushions. In less than an hour I had machine washed it and it was ready to go again. It is the easiest couch thus for to clean, take care of and move around. We also decided to take off one of the arm rests from a section of the couch and two of the head rests from the recliners because we found it more comfortable and workable for us right now. In short, we don’t want a living room that feels untouchable. We want one that gets lived in.

The Hidden Parent Win: Storage

I didn’t think I’d care much about the storage. Turns out, I care deeply about the storage. Extra blankets? Stored, and I’m talking like 8 blankets, the ottoman is huge!

Books? Stored. Random kid treasures? Stored. The endless accumulation of cozy-family-life clutter? Hidden away in seconds. And on top of that, the center console can charge up to 4 items. I didn’t think this would be used very much, but actually it’s super nice to be able set our projector there and have it be plugged in the whole time while we watch a movie.

We somehow manage to own both too much gear and too many blankets, and having additional storage built directly into the couch has genuinely helped our living room feel calmer and more functional.

A More Affordable Modular Option

One thing that stood out right away was the value. There are A LOT of modular couch options out there right now, and many of them come with massive price tags. We looked at several before landing on this one, and the Soma Chic House couch felt noticeably more attainable while still feeling comfortable, durable, and well-designed. Their customer service is also amazing, which I was pleasantly surprised by. After receiving a slightly damaged recliner, they shipped a new one out to us right away.

This doesn’t feel like a “budget compromise.” Instead, it feels like a smart family purchase that has elevated many parts of our family life. Especially for a household where furniture needs to survive kids, guests, movie nights, recovery days, gear explosions, and actual daily life.

Final Thoughts

What surprised me most about this couch wasn’t really the modular design, the storage, or even the comfort. It was how quickly it leveled up our family moments. I love our before bed snuggles, our reading time and my early morning chill time before the house wakes.

For a family that spends a lot of time moving — training, racing, exploring, camping, biking, climbing, paddling, and constantly heading outside, having a cozy place to all land together at the end of the day matters more than I realized.

The Soma Chic House couch has become that place for us.

And coming from someone who never thought she was a couch person… that’s saying something.
